Analytics Setup Audit
/analytics-audit
Claude Code reviews your GA4 property and GTM container configuration to find where tracking is broken, misconfigured, or missing. It identifies which conversion events aren't firing correctly, which traffic sources are being misattributed, and where data gaps are leading to bad decisions.
What this skill does
Audit GA4 event configuration for missing or duplicate conversion events
Review GTM container structure for tag conflicts, trigger errors, and firing sequence issues
Identify traffic source misattribution from missing UTM parameters or incorrect channel groupings
Find data sampling issues and configuration settings that affect report accuracy
How to use it
Export your configuration data
Share your GA4 property settings, conversion event list, and GTM container export (JSON), or describe your current tracking setup in detail.
Run /analytics-audit
Tell Claude Code which business goals depend on this data and any specific reports or metrics you suspect are inaccurate.
Fix and verify
Work through the prioritized fixes starting with conversion tracking, then attribution, then data quality improvements.
Example prompts
$Audit our GA4 setup. We set it up 8 months ago and I'm not confident our purchase conversion events are all firing correctly. Here's our event list.
$Our direct traffic is 40% of sessions in GA4 which seems too high. Something is wrong with our UTM setup. Help me find and fix it.
$Review our GTM container. We have 47 tags and I think there are conflicts causing double-tracking on some events. Here's the container export.
Who it's for
Marketing teams making budget decisions based on analytics data they're not sure is accurate
New analysts who inherited a GA4 setup and need to verify it before trusting the data
Agencies onboarding new clients who need to audit the existing analytics foundation
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if my GA4 tracking is broken?
Check your conversion events in GA4 Realtime while completing the conversion yourself on your website. If the event doesn't appear within 30 seconds, it's not tracking. Claude Code can diagnose the cause from your GTM configuration and event setup.
What's the most common GA4 setup mistake?
Not marking the right events as conversions in GA4's admin panel. GA4 tracks events but won't attribute them to campaigns or count them in conversion reports until they're explicitly marked as conversions. This is a simple fix that unlocks accurate data throughout the platform.
Do I need GA4 and GTM, or can I use just one?
You can implement GA4 directly without GTM, but GTM makes future changes faster and easier. For any site with multiple tracking needs (analytics, ads pixels, heatmaps), GTM prevents tag implementation from depending on developer resources. Claude Code recommends the right setup for your team's technical capacity.
